It is significant that the 10,000 or so petitions against a possible smoking ban in Winnipeg's bars and restaurants were delivered to city hall yesterday in garbage bags. That's exactly what an all out smoking ban is -- garbage. (Winnipeg Sun)

Addicted Smokers, Drinkers Less Likely To Get Parkinson's:
Smoking can decrease the likelihood of getting the crippling disease by 50%, the researchers found.

Winnipeg Smoking Ban:
Mayor Glen Murray is quoted as saying, "Government can't regulate people's behaviour.", and Deputy Mayor Lillian Thomas (Elmwood), "Tobacco is legal and people have rights."


Fat Smokers Save You Money:
Instead of focusing on its core mission of preventing communicable disease outbreaks, the CDC has opted for a national effort to fight obesity. I don’t think it’s the government’s business whether I eat a Big Mac today, so I urged CDC officials to go back to doing what we pay them to do – guard against deadly viruses.

France Cracks Down On Cigarettes, Alcohol:
For now though, the government appears willing to limit its fight against addiction to adverts and booklets rather than a major hike in its low duties on wine, spirits and cigarettes. (eindia.com)

The Scottish Licensed Trade Association is asking licensed bars to sign a voluntary "Smoking Charter," drafted by brewers, licensed retailers and the Scottish Tourism Forum, which advocates partitioning bars to smoking and non-smoking areas. The Association plans to present the charter at its meeting in Dundee at the end of May. (Daily Record)

Ireland's Licensed Vintners' Association (LVA) has taken initiative to implement "Traditional Hospitality," a high-tech ventilation system that automatically switches itself on when the air needs purification, in pubs. The LVA believes banning smoking in pubs or sectioning smoking and non-smoking areas would be impractical. (Irish Times)

Zimbabwe's government-controlled newspaper The Herald accused white farmers of blackmailing the government by delaying the delivery of tobacco to the auction floors, calling it "a shameless act aimed at holding the government to ransom." The newspaper claimed the Zimbabwe Tobacco Association advised its members to withhold their crop partly because of farm invasions by independence war veterans. (Agence France Presse)
